Award-Winning Journalist
Nat Burns’s ten-year career as a reporter led to feature and cover stories
appearing in periodicals such as Charlottesville/Albemarle Observer,
Albemarle Magazine, Inside UVA, Emory & Henry Alumni Magazine and
Virginia Review. Her review column appears monthly in Lesbian News
magazine.
Award-Winning Author
First published as a child, with a short poem in a children’s magazine, Burns
has enjoyed a life devoted to the written word. Most recently, her fiction has
appeared in Sinister Wisdom and Candor. Her story, "Jane Bishop’s Eyes"
appeared in All in the Seasoning, an anthology by Bywater Books. Another
recent collection, The Blue Ridge Anthology by Cedar Creek Publishing,
offers two of her award-winning works. Her work has appeared in recent
anthologies: Affinity and Friends put the X back in X-mas and Girl Fever: 69
Stories of Sudden Sex for Lesbians
Burns has won fiction honors from Writer's Digest, Muse Magazine, Writers
in Virginia, The Virginia Writing Club, Piedmont Writing Institute and
Writers of the Future.
Columnist
Burns's column "Notes from Nat" appears each month in Lesbian News.
Poet
Burn’s poem, "Womanwalk", won first place in the Virginia Writing Club,
Charlottesville, and third place in the VWC state competition.
Other poems have appeared in Lynchburg Magazine, The Wishing Well,
Muse Magazine, Witness to the Bizarre, Worlds of Surrealism, and Emerald
Isle. Her poetry book, Gospel, was a finalist in the 2014 Goldie Literary
Awards
Romance/intrigue novels include The Quality of Blue, Two Weeks in August,
House of Cards, Identity, The Book of Eleanor, Poison Flowers, Family Issue
and Nether Regions.
Playwright
One of Burns’s plays, Truman’s Word, premiered March, 1993. Produced by
the Women’s History Project, it was directed by Maxine Fox, noted Broadway
producer who produced several award-winning plays, including Grease and
Over There.
Writing Advocate
In tandem with the Writers in Virginia Program, Burns has worked
extensively with area youth, teaching journalism and creative writing. She
also taught under the Nelson County Summer Enrichment Program for many
years and served five years as a judge in the Piedmont Area Reading
Council's Young Authors Program.
Editor/Proofreader/Systems Manager
As an editor, Burns has served with the Small Press Writers and Artists
Organization, VaNOW, Byrd Newspapers, County of Nelson, Virginia and
Carden Jennings Publishing.
Burns has edited the science fiction anthology All Aboard, released by AE
Press, the memoir, Pieces of Pie: Surviving Love, by Pie Dumas, released by
Skye’s the Limit Publications and Excuse Me, Your God Is Waiting by
Michelle Prosser, released by Hampton Roads.
Burns has more than 10 years' experience in computer troubleshooting and
